Top tips for making the most of your vacation scheme

Research the firm very well and be prepared to use the vacation scheme as an opportunity to network with people at the firm and learn about topics you are genuinely interested in

Be proactive and don't be afraid to say yes to the wide range of opportunities that the firm offers to vacation schemers - that is the best way to get to know the firm and its people

Be organised - write to-do lists (or however best you organise yourself) so you know what you need to do on each day and make sure you keep your supervisor and trainee buddies aware of your timetable.

Offer your help where you have capacity - this shows that you are being proactive and going beyond work being given to you.

Try and talk to a wide variety of firm members during your time on the scheme - set up catch ups / virtual coffee meetings with trainees, associates and partners and come prepared to those meetings with any questions you would like answered.

Take time out for yourself where you can - breathe, recollect, make sure you keep yourself well nourished and watered and prepare yourself for your next session/meeting.

Be yourself – don't try and be someone you are not or think you should be. You have gotten the vacation scheme for a reason! Let who you are shine through and make the most of the time you have.

Always think about presentation and remember to check for spelling and grammar mistakes (don't rely on the computer to spot them).

Don't underestimate the importance of first impressions and ask lots of questions! You're there to learn about the firm as much as they are learning about you.
